How to write a winning SOP - Statement of purpose for Internship/Foreign University/PhD Application

               

             Generally, People who are applying for internships/short or long term research project or degree from foreign university much aware of the job of SOP and LOR; SOP is a short essay or paragraph. An SOP (statement of purpose) talks about the previous experience – National and international exposure research aptitude and academic qualifications included – and it must say why you think you’re fit for a course. It must capture your zeal and enthusiasm to get enrolled.

Here, I will share with you my way of writing an SOP as requested by some undergrad students who were unclear about SOP writing

1. Write about that turning point. ❤️ - everyone has a spark or point in life when they might have decided to take up science as a career. Love or passion for pursuing science

2. WHY you really need this opportunity ❓️- make it clear about the areas that you want to get trained in specific, such as learning a lab-based technique or it can be as simple as gaining exposure to day-to-day scientific research happening in a lab.

3. WHAT you have done so far to achieve the "said-goal" ❓️

4. Describe your academic background, preparation, and training - Any kind of relevant work or internship experience as related to the field you are applying to ( it may your thesis work, Project work your awards

Anyone can write about their dream or passion, however, that is not enough. It is always good to show the effort that you have put in making your dream into reality. This will make your application stand out and show that you actually work towards your set goal.

This can be highlighting the awards, good grades, previous research experience, outreach activities, science blogging or science-related activities that you have already done. This information is often found in your CV, so don't just repeat the same, write about the story or inspiration behind it and insights on what you gained from it. If possible relate and extend the story to the current opportunity.

4. WHAT you can contribute to the lab that you are interested in joining❓️A specific skill that you can offer to help with the lab's scientific research and progress.

✔️ Always be genuine, tell YOUR story, and make sure your passion comes across in the writing.

✔️Put effort in avoiding grammar mistakes, do spell check and if possible ask someone to read it to see if they can understand your writing clearly.

❌️ Never ask someone to write your SOP.

❌️ Don't copy or plagiarize
