From My First Flight to the Global Research Journey
A Young Indian Researcher’s Journey from PhD Research to Lancaster and Beyond
For many researchers, an international research visit begins with an acceptance letter, a grant approval or a research proposal. For me, it begins with something much more personal: my first flight abroad.
In January 2027, I will travel from India to the United Kingdom for a research visit at Lancaster University. What makes this journey special is not simply the destination. It represents a transition—from working within the familiar environment of an Indian agricultural university to experiencing an international research laboratory, scientific culture and collaborative research ecosystem.
My research interests lie at the intersection of plant biotechnology, plant physiology and sustainable agriculture. During this visit, I will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with Prof. Ian Dodd and explore questions related to water stress, plant signalling and reproductive responses in chilli (Capsicum annuum).
From a Research Question to an International Laboratory
Scientific research does not develop in isolation. A good research question often leads to another question, and sometimes the answer requires expertise, facilities or perspectives that are not available in one's own laboratory.
This is where international scientific exchange becomes valuable.
The EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant is one such mechanism. It supports research exchanges between eligible laboratories and is designed to facilitate the transfer of expertise, techniques and scientific knowledge. For researchers based in India, the programme is particularly relevant because India is an EMBO global partner.
For my own journey, the important lesson is that funding is not merely financial support—it can become a bridge between researchers, laboratories and ideas.
Learning the Funding Ecosystem
One of the most important things I have learned during this process is that research funding is not a single opportunity. It is an ecosystem.
EMBO provides several opportunities ranging from Scientific Exchange Grants to fellowships and programmes supporting scientific careers and international collaboration.
In India, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) provides several research-support mechanisms. Its International Travel Support scheme, for example, provides financial assistance to eligible Indian researchers attending international scientific events and offers specific support for young researchers attending eligible training programmes, workshops and short-term schools abroad.
Other ANRF programmes support research development, including grants for researchers establishing research programmes and larger competitive research projects.
Understanding these opportunities is itself a research skill.
A young researcher needs to learn not only how to conduct experiments, analyse data and publish papers, but also how to identify the right funding mechanism, prepare a scientifically convincing proposal, build collaborations and communicate the potential impact of the research.
My First Flight: More Than Just Travel
For someone taking a first international flight, there is naturally excitement—and a little uncertainty.
Airport procedures, immigration, baggage, currency, accommodation, local transport and adapting to a new environment are all part of the experience.
But behind these practical questions lies a much larger personal milestone.
The journey from an agricultural university in India to a research laboratory in the UK is a reminder that science can create connections far beyond geographical boundaries.
The first flight therefore represents more than travelling from one country to another.
It represents travelling from familiarity towards possibility.
From India to Lancaster: Carrying Questions, Not Just Luggage
I will travel to Lancaster carrying research documents, protocols, notebooks and scientific questions.
But I will also carry something less visible: the experience of working in Indian agricultural research, the challenges faced by farmers, and the need to develop technologies that are scientifically rigorous but also relevant to real agricultural conditions.
The research question surrounding water stress in chilli is particularly important in the context of climate change.
How does a plant perceive limited water?
How are stress signals communicated?
What happens to reproductive tissues?
Can water-saving irrigation strategies influence molecular responses?
And ultimately, can understanding these mechanisms help us develop more water-efficient agricultural systems?
These questions connect plant physiology with molecular biology and sustainable agriculture.
The Bigger Lesson
My journey has also changed the way I think about a research career.
A PhD is not necessarily the end of education. It can be the beginning of a much larger scientific journey.
International research visits can expose young scientists to new methodologies, laboratory cultures, scientific discussions and collaborations. They can also help researchers understand how scientific ideas are transformed into projects, grants, publications and long-term collaborations.
The challenge is to return from such experiences not merely with certificates or publications, but with new scientific capability.
Beyond One Grant
An EMBO grant or an international research visit should not be viewed as an isolated achievement.
It can be the first step towards future collaborations, larger research proposals and independent research programmes.
Similarly, opportunities such as ANRF's International Travel Support and other research schemes demonstrate that Indian researchers have multiple avenues through which they can seek support for international scientific engagement.
The key is to start early, understand eligibility requirements, identify the right programme and build a research proposal around a genuine scientific question.
The Beginning, Not the Destination
My first flight to the UK will eventually land at an airport. But the real destination is much larger.
It is the opportunity to learn.
To collaborate.
To ask better questions.
To understand science from another perspective.
And eventually, to bring that knowledge back into the Indian research ecosystem.
From a first flight to an international laboratory, from a PhD research question to a global collaboration, and from a single grant to a long-term scientific career the journey is only beginning.
A researcher does not travel abroad merely to cross a border.
A researcher travels to cross the boundaries of knowledge.
